There are days when life feels predictable, and there are days when it reminds us just how little control we really have. The truth is, all of us are passengers on a raft floating down the Niagara River. We paddle, we steer, we make plans, and we do our best—but the current has always been there, carrying us forward.
Maybe that’s why the little moments matter so much.
A cup of coffee shared with a friend. The laughter of grandchildren. A favorite song playing unexpectedly on the radio. Watching the sunrise before the rest of the world wakes up. These moments don’t stop the current, but they give meaning to the journey.
As Baby Boomers, we’ve seen triumphs and setbacks, celebrations and heartbreaks. We’ve learned that character isn’t built when everything goes according to plan. It’s shaped by how we respond when life surprises us. A good sense of humor helps. So does humility. Both remind us that none of us has all the answers, and that’s perfectly okay.
Sometimes we spend so much energy trying to divert our attention from the obvious—that life is temporary—that we forget to fully experience the time we’ve been given. Instead of fearing the river, perhaps we should appreciate the scenery. Smile more often. Forgive a little quicker. Tell the stories that deserve to be remembered. Say “I love you” while you still can.
Every day offers another chance to savor the ride.
Today, I hope you’ll pause for a moment and notice something beautiful that might otherwise pass you by. Those are the memories that stay with us long after the bigger events have faded.
I’d love to hear from you.
What helps you savor each moment of life? What lesson has your journey taught you about character, humor, or humility?
