Chances are you’ve heard plenty about AI chatbots like Claude and
ChatGPT. Maybe you’ve tried one and gotten a vague or disappointing
answer. Here’s the good news: the problem is usually not you or the
tool. It’s the way the question was asked. A few simple habits can turn
a mediocre reply into a genuinely useful one.
“The clearer your question, the better the answer.
That’s true for people and for AI.”
Think of It as a Capable Assistant
Imagine hiring a smart helper who knows a little about everything but
nothing about you. You wouldn’t say “write something about sleep” and
expect perfection. You’d explain what you need, who it’s for, and how
you want it done. AI works the same way.
Eight Tips That Make a Difference
1. Say who and why. “Write a blog post for Baby Boomers about
sleep” beats “write about sleep.”
2. Be specific. Mention length, tone, and format, such as “300 to 500
words, friendly, no jargon.”
3. Give an example. Paste in something you like and say “match this
style.”
4. Provide your own material. Share the notes, numbers, or text you
want it to use rather than letting it guess.
5. Break big jobs into steps. Ask for an outline first, approve it, then
request the full draft.
6. Choose the output. Ask for a list, a table, or plain paragraphs,

whatever you will actually use.
7. Treat the first answer as a draft. Follow up with “shorter,”
“warmer,” or “cut the second section.”
8. Double-check the facts. AI can sound confident and still be wrong,
so verify anything important, especially health, legal, or money
matters.
A Simple Template to Try
Fill in the blanks: “I’m [who you are] writing [what] for [audience]. Use
[tone and length]. Include [details]. Avoid [things to skip].” It takes
thirty seconds, and the difference in results is often dramatic.
Don’t Be Shy
You can’t break it, and you don’t need special wording. Type the way
you’d talk, and keep adjusting until you get what you want. The more
you practice, the more natural it feels.
