A Good Laugh Is Good for You

Somewhere along the way, many of us decided that grown-up life is serious business.
Bills, appointments, headlines, and a to-do list that never quite ends. But after all these
decades, we Boomers know something the younger crowd is still learning: a good laugh
is the cheapest medicine going, and it never needs a prescription.
Laughter Lightens the Load
Humor doesn’t make our problems disappear, but it shrinks them down to a manageable
size. A burnt dinner becomes a story. A forgotten name becomes a punchline. When we
can laugh at ourselves, the world loses a little of its sting, and we walk away feeling
lighter than we arrived.
“Humor doesn’t erase the bumps in the road. It just gives us
a softer seat.”
A Joke Worth Sharing
Sometimes a friend says it best. When I asked a friend how life was treating her, she
said, “Like a Pinata.”
I laughed out loud, and then I understood her completely. Swatted from every direction,
spinning around half the time, and somehow still expected to come out sweet in the end.
If you’ve ever had one of those weeks, you know exactly what she meant.
Laughter Connects Us
Think of the people you love spending time with. Chances are they make you laugh.
Shared humor builds friendships, softens disagreements, and bridges the years between
generations. Our grandkids may not get our favorite old comedians, but a well-timed joke
speaks every age’s language.
Make Room for Fun
You don’t need a comedy club to add more laughter to your day. Try a few simple habits:
Keep a “joke file” of the ones that made you chuckle. Call the friend who always gets

you giggling. Watch a favorite old comedy rerun. And when life hands you a pinata
moment, take a breath and look for the funny side. It’s usually hiding right there.
Your Turn: Share a Laugh!
