You’ve seen more change than almost any generation in history: black-
and-white television to the smartphone, rotary dials to video calls, the
Space Race to the internet. Your grandchildren will never know that
world unless you tell them. And here’s the secret: you don’t need to be
a “writer” to leave a story worth reading.
“Nobody else lived your life. If you don’t tell it, no
one can.”
Why It Matters
Facts fade quickly. Within a couple of generations, even the names of
great-grandparents can disappear. A personal story preserves not just
what happened, but how it felt, what you valued, and what you
learned. It may well be the most personal piece of your legacy.
How to Begin Without Panic
1. Start small. Don’t try to write “the whole book.” Write about one
memory: your first car, your first job, the day you met your spouse.
2. Use prompts. “What did your childhood kitchen smell like?” “Who
taught you something that stuck?” “What was the hardest decision
you ever made?”
3. Talk instead of typing. Record yourself with your phone and have
the audio transcribed. Many people find speaking far easier than
writing.
4. Write short chapters. A page or two per sitting adds up faster
than you’d think.
5. Pull out the photos. One old picture can unlock an entire

afternoon of memories.
Write It the Way You Talk
Skip the fancy language. Your family wants to hear your voice, your
humor, and even your mistakes. Be honest about the struggles as well
as the triumphs, because that’s where the wisdom is.
Share It
Print a few copies for your children and grandchildren, or simply keep a
shared folder of your stories. Even twenty pages, written one memory
at a time, will be treasured long after you’ve finished them.
