Nobody announces the day it begins. You reach for a towel and sway a little, or you stand up
quickly and the room tilts. Balance fades slowly, which is exactly why it is so easy to ignore. Yet
falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults, and the good news is that balance is a skill
—and like any skill, it responds to practice.
“Balance is not something we have. It is something we keep.”
Build the Foundation
Strong legs and a steady core are the best insurance against a stumble. Walking, gardening, and
climbing stairs all count. Many Boomers also swear by tai chi, a slow, flowing practice that
research has linked to fewer falls. Chair exercises and community-center classes designed for
seniors are another gentle way to begin. Whatever you choose, check with your doctor before
starting something new.
Practice Standing Still
Balance practice can happen in your own kitchen. Stand near the counter with your fingertips
resting on it for safety, and try standing on one foot while you brush your teeth or wait for the
kettle. Keep it brief, switch sides, and never practice without something sturdy within reach.
Small moments, repeated daily, add up faster than you would expect.
Look at the Whole Picture
Balance depends on more than muscles. Your eyes, inner ears, and feet all send signals to the
brain, so keep up with vision and hearing checkups. Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether any
of your medications can cause dizziness, especially if you take several. Wear shoes with firm
soles and good grip, and retire the slippery slippers. And if you are feeling unsteady, tell your
doctor. That is exactly the kind of thing they want to know about.
Make Your Home Work for You
Good lighting on stairs and in hallways, a night light on the way to the bathroom, grab bars in the
shower, and no loose throw rugs can prevent more falls than any exercise program. Few of these
cost much, and all of them pay off.
